Shardul Thakur says he has some batting talent

India’s batting hero Shardul Thakur, after making an attacking 67 against Australia on the third day in Brisbane, claimed that he is no dud with the bat, has some talent for it.

Thakur, playing his only second Test, was the most unlikely savior to rescue Team India after being brought down to 186 for six, still trailing the Aussies by 183 runs in the first innings.

However, the 29-year-old cricketer hailing from the small town of Palgarh, Maharashtra did just that, joining hands with debutant Washington Sundar (62) for a combative 123-run seventh wicket stand which helped his team cut down the home side’s first innings lead to just 33 runs.

“Australian players were trying to have a conversation with me, but I was not replying. I just replied once or twice, there were a lot of normal questions, even if they were trying to sledge me, I did not hear it, I just played on,” said Thakur at the post-day virtual press conference.

“I have the talent for batting, whenever there are throwdowns taking place in nets, I practice my batting, these are the type of moments for which we practice our batting. An opportunity presented itself in this match, I knew that the team would benefit if I stay at the crease for a long haul. I haven’t batted with Sundar much, I have just batted with him once or twice, once it was in a T20 match and once it was a practice game,” he added.

It should be noted that this is not the first display of heroics for Thakur with the bat for India, as during an ODI against West Indies, his unbeaten 17 off six balls had helped India win by four wickets in a nail-biting finisher.

Thakur also shared how words from the head coach Ravi Shastri have been a big inspiration behind his batting performance.

“When I walked in, the situation was difficult I would not deny that. The crowd was cheering for Australians bowlers. But I remembered our coach Ravi Shastri saying right at the start of the One-day series that ‘if you perform in this country, you will be rewarded’”, Thakur said.
