Bangladesh to don special jerseys in West Indies ODIs

Bangladesh cricket team will wear a special jersey designed based on the idea of the national flag during the ODI matches against West Indies to commemorate fifty years of Bangladesh’s independence.

Besides the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) is also planning to celebrate Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s birth centenary.

BCB’s chairman of cricket operations, Akram Khan confirmed the news on Sunday (January 17).

“Much like the entire nation, we, the cricket board and the players, are going to join the celebration. We kept the occasion of 50-year of Bangladesh in mind while designing the new jersey.

“The jersey is designed inspired by our national flag — we kept the red sun of our flag in the jersey,” said the former Bangladesh captain, explaining that it will depict the joy of freedom fighters after the victory as well as the national memorial.

The cricket board also has plans to introduce special coins on the occasion Bangabandhu’s birth centenary as well as the 50th anniversary of independence.

“We had huge plans but due to the corona virus pandemic, we had to think about health safety too. However, we might consider launching a special coin for the toss to mark the occasion during the series. We will finalise it later as we have time,” Akram said.

The three-match ODI series against West Indies will roll onto the ground from January 20 in Dhaka. This series will mark Bangladesh’s first series after the Covid-19 outbreak.
