The blistering start was provided by openers Jason Roy and Jonny Bairstow, the latter doing the majority of the job. Bairstow smacked 6 fours and 7 sixes on course to his 66-ball 94 runs, falling short of an 11th ODI hundred.

Roy made 46 from 35 as he was the first to fall to Prasidh Krishna, who claimed the best figures (4/54) for an Indian debutant.

Ben Stokes was sent into three and could only make 1 from 11. England lost Bairstow, skipper Eoin Morgan (22) and Jos Buttler (2) in space of 15 balls to push back to 176/5 in 24.4 overs.

In the end the spirited performances of Krishna, Shardul Thakur (3/37) and Bhuvneshwar Kumar (2/30) got India to 1-0 lead.

Earlier in the day Shikhar Dhawan’s 98 and middle-order’s onslaught helped India post 317/5 after losing the toss. Dhawan played 106 balls, in which he hit 11 fours and 2 sixes, before holding out to midwicket off Stokes.

Virat Kohli made 56 off 60 as the Indian skipper paired on a 105-run partnership with Dhawan.

The show was overtaken by debutant Krunal Pandya and KL Rahul. Krunal recorded the fastest fifty (in 26 balls) by a debutant in ODI cricket. He remained unbeaten on 31-ball 58 runs, hitting 7 boundaries and 2 maximums.

Rahul struggled for runs early into his innings but got his way to eight-boundary (four sixes, four fours) studded 62* runs off 43 balls. He and Krunal unbroken stand of 112 runs for the sixth wicket.

Brief scores:

India 317/5 in 50 overs (Dhawan 98, Rahul 62*, K Pandya 58*, Kohli 56; Stokes 3/34)

England 251/10 in 42.1 overs (Bairstow 94, Roy 46; Krishna 4/54, Thakur 3/37, Kumar 2/30)

India won by 66 runs
