Gavaskar picks India’s opening pair for 1st T20I versus Australia

Team India failed miserably against Australia in the first two ODIs. While it looked like they were going to be whitewashed by Aussies, Indians played for pride and saved themselves from a massacre. India won the third and final ODI by 13 runs at Manuka Oval in Canberra.

Hardik Pandya (90), Ravindra Jadeja (66) and Virat Kohli (63) chipped in with notable contributions to help India post a competitive total of 302 on the board. Australia tried their best but fell short of the run-chase. Hardik Pandya was named the man of the match while Steve Smith was named the player of the series.

The three-match ODI series is done and dusted. The action shifts to the T20I series and the first match is scheduled to be played at Manuka Oval in Canberra on December 4, Friday. Both teams will be looking forward to giving absolutely everything on the field.

Sunil Gavaskar suggests best opening pair for India in first T20I

On top of that, taking the first lead in the series will be the primary goal for both teams. Meanwhile, former Indian legendary cricketer Sunil Gavaskar has picked India’s opening pair for the first T20I against Australia.

The commentator reckons that KL Rahul and Shikhar Dhawan should open the innings for India. KL Rahul won the orange cap as he ended the previous IPL tournament with 670 runs. On the other hand, Dhawan was the second-highest run-scorer in the tournament.

Both the stalwarts continued their good touch with the bat by scoring a fifty each in the just-concluded ODI series. If these two players bat together, they are destined to touch the pinnacle of success by adding more runs for the team.

Speaking to India Today, Indian batting maestro Sunil Gavaskar said, “For me, KL Rahul, who scored nearly 700 runs in IPL, and Shikhar Dhawan, who has of late looked most comfortable in T20 format should open the innings followed by Virat Kohli.”

“If they stay till 14th or 15th over, then Hardik Pandya comes in at number four or if two wickets go in Powerplay, then Shreyas Iyer,” he added.
