Liton, Fizz star as Chattogram win nail-biter

Gazi Group Chattogram are continuing their unbeaten run in Bangabandhu T20 Cup 2020, clinching a thrilling one-run win over Minister Group Rajshahi in match No.10 at Shere Bangla National Cricket Stadium.

The game was down to the wire as Rajshahi needed 14 off the last over from Mustafizur Rahman with four wickets in hand. Nurul Hasan Sohan departed on the first ball and then Rony Talukdar played two dots, the first dot was a denied single.

The fourth ball went for a big six over the long-on. Just as it seemed the fifth ball was a good ball, an inside-edged Fizz yorker went for four to leave the game down to 4 off 1. Rony, who was demoted to No.8, managed only two runs off the last ball.

Chasing 176, Rajshahi openers Nazmul Hossain Shanto and Anisul Islam Emon delivered a much needed quickfire start, adding 56 runs in 5.4 overs. Rajshahi captain Shanto, who made 25 off 14, became Mustafizur’s 150th T20 scalp.

Anisul raced his way to a maiden half-century while Mohammad Ashraful (20 off 19) was sent back by Mosaddek Hossain in the same over when Ashraful was gifted a ‘six, thanks to dropping a catch and overthrows.

Ziaur Rahman entered the action with the wicket of Anisul, who hit 44-ball 58 including 6 fours and a six.

Later, Mahedi Hasan’s 25 off 17 and Farhad Reza’s 5-ball 12 gave Chattogram a scare which had Chattogram biting their nails till the final ball of the match.

Left-arm pacers Mustafizur (3/37) and Shoriful (2/41) went for runs but were effective in handing Chattogram a fourth straight win.

Chattogram were off to a flying start, thanks to the elegance of Soumya Sarkar and Liton Das, whose art got them to 49/0 in 4 overs. Arafat Sunny later pulled it back by giving away only one run in the fifth over. Soumya’s innings ended on 25-ball 34 as he drove one straight to long-on off Mukidul Islam Mugdho. The opening stand put on 62 runs in 7.2 overs.

Liton, however, carried his bat all the way to the 20th over albeit he could not reach a hundred as Mosaddek was brisk in his 28-ball 42-run cameo that included 2 fours and 2 sixes to guide Chattogram to 176/5, the highest total of the tournament.

Flicks, pulls, reverse sweeps and lovely eye-catching cover drives – Liton’s knock of career-best 78* had it all. He hit one six and 9 fours in the 53 balls he played.

Chattogram looked to be in hunt for 200-ish total but the other top-order batsmen did not help. Skipper Mohammad Mithun’s (11 off 12) stumps were rattled by part-time medium pacer Anisul as Mithun attempted a scoop shot. In the next over, 13th, Shamsur Rahman (1 off 2) did the carbon copy of Mithun, off Farhad Reza’s bowling.

Chattogram are currently placed on top of the table with 8 points. Rajshahi are standing at No.2 with 4 points.
