Khulna were not the only ones interested to rope in Mashrafe. Minister Group Rajshahi, one of the weaker sides, wholeheartedly wanted him in the team.

The former Bangladesh skipper last played competitive cricket in March during the Dhaka Premier League. He also resigned from Bangladesh’s ODI captaincy against Zimbabwe.

Mashrafe returned to training this week, making a surprise entry at Mirpur Academy Ground, the same place where several teams do their preparations.

All teams were slotted for 16 members-a-side in Bangabandhu T20 Cup 2020. BCB made a special consideration for Mashrafe, allowing the team who picks Mash to have 17 men.

Khulna had earlier made a replacement of Shafiul Islam, who has been ruled of the tournament with injury. Another pacer Khaled Ahmed has been included in the camp. With the likes of Al-Amin Hossain and Shakib Al Hasan already in the bowling group, Mashrafe’s inclusion will add more strength to Mahmudullah Riyad’s side.

Khulna will play their sixth match of the tournament against Rajshahi on Sunday evening. Mashrafe is likely to be available for matches against Gazi Group Chattogram and Beximco Dhaka before the play-offs stage.
