Mike Hesson confirms RCB’s opening pair for IPL 2021

Royal Challengers Bangalore had a pretty decent campaign in the previous season of the Indian Premier League at the United Arab Emirates. Virat Kohli-led team finished third in the points table and qualified for the playoffs but lost to Sunrisers Hyderabad in the Eliminator.

They are one of the three teams that are yet to win a title in the tournament. They made it to the IPL final on three occasions but lost all of them. However, this time around, they look like a completely new team altogether.

They did a cleaning process where they released as many as 10 players. However, they retained the core part of the team. Meanwhile, RCB’s Director of Cricket Operations, Mike Hesson confirmed the team’s opening pair for the next season.

Kohli and Padikkal will open the innings for RCB: Mike Hesson

Earlier, Indian captain Virat Kohli confirmed that he will be opening the innings for RCB. Now, Mike Hesson has confirmed that Virat Kohli and Devdutt Padikkal will be the opening pair.

”I am going to open in the IPL as well. Have batted in different positions in the past. But I feel we have a solid middle-order now. Will definitely like to partner Rohit at the top. Other guys feel a lot more confident when one of us is still in and is set. Augurs well for the team,” the Indian skipper had said.

Padikkal was the top run-scorer for RCB in the previous season. The Karanataka batsman scored 473 runs including 5 fifties to his name, registering his personal best score of 73. On the other hand, Kohli scored 466 runs including 3 fifties, registering 90* against CSK in the last season.

RCB tried the likes of Australia’s Aaron Finch and Josh Philippe at the top with Devdutt Padikkal last season but their experimentation didn’t work. Mike Hesson who confirmed that Kohli and Padikkal will open the innings had highlighted the 32-year-old’s record while opening the innings.

“We are looking forward to seeing Padikkal – Kohli opening the batting, the record of Kohli is phenomenal after he gets through the powerplay and we saw how well he did in the 5th T20 after opening the batting,” Hesson said according to RCB’s official website.
