Moeen Ali looks set to miss entire Sri Lanka series

England all-rounder Moeen Ali is set to miss the entirety of England’s tour of Sri Lanka. He has been told to self-isolate for at least another four days following a positive coronavirus test on arrival in the country.

Having already spent 10 days in quarantine, Ali was earlier expected to be rejoining the rest of the squad on Wednesday (January 13).

But the Sri Lankan government have stepped in and asked the touring side that the 33-year-old must stay in until at least Saturday, as he showed symptoms of COVID-19 over the past week.

Ali was already ruled out of the first Test in Galle starting from Thursday. And now, with the second and final match of the series, also in Galle, starting a week on Friday (January 22), there is also hardly any chance for him to be ready and compete for a place in the playing XI with too little time to get him match sharp

The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) seem to be sympathetic to the decision and expect Ali to be allowed out of his private accommodation around the weekend. Besides their focus will now be on Ali regaining his fitness ahead of the tour to India.

Meanwhile Chris Woakes is also likely to miss the first Test in Galle due to the 31-year-old having spent seven days of the build-up in isolation.

The seamer was identified as a close contact after Moeen Ali tested positive for Covid-19 and was forced to quarantine and undergo extra testing.
