His included as many as 8 fours and 2 sixes. Even in the third Test match against Australia in Sydney, Pant was the pick of the batsmen as he scored an impressive 97 in the fourth innings.

Coming in to bat at No.5 after the departure of Rohit Sharma, Shubman Gill and Ajinkya Rahane, Pant added a vital 148-run stand with Cheteshwar Pujara which put the team in the comfort zone. The third Test ended in a draw. Team India’s head coach Ravi Shastri was absolutely pleased with the way Pant conducted himself in the fourth Test match in Brisbane.

“We play Pant abroad because he is a match-winner. When he doesn’t keep well, people criticize him. But he can help you win matches like these. Had he stuck around for some time in Sydney, he could have won us that game as well. He has been brilliant and that’s why we back him,” Shastri added in a statement after Team India’s 2-1 series win over Australia.

India secured their second Test series win in Australian soil. Pant was named the man of the match for his batting masterclass in Brisbane Test. “This is one of my biggest days in life. The support the team has given me even when I was not playing has been incredible. It’s a dream come true.

We’ve been practising hard after the first Test. The team management always backs me and tells me you are match-winner and you have to go out there and win and I am happy I did it. It was a fifth-day pitch and the ball was turning,” Pant said at the post-match presentation.

Pant breaks MS Dhoni’s record in Tests

Pant jumped to the career-best 13th place in the latest ICC Test batting rankings. In fact, he is now the best-ranked wicketkeeper-batsman in the world. Quinton de Kock comes second in the list.

Pant now has a record rating points of 691 and no other Indian wicketkeeper has ever gained these many rating points. The previous record was held by the former Indian skipper MS Dhoni who reached 662 rating points in ICC Test batsmen rankings only once in his Test career.
