Sanjay Bangar names new Indian opening pair for 2nd T20I versus Australia

India might have lost ODI series against Australia but they ensured to start the T20I series on a winning note. Team India defeated the hosts by 11 runs at Manuka Oval in Canberra and took a 1-0 lead in the three-match T20I series. Ahead of the T20I opener, Sunil Gavaskar suggested that India should go with KL Rahul and Shikhar Dhawan as openers.

Interestingly, both of them opened the innings considering their form in the shortest format. In the 13th edition of the IPL, Rahul and Dhawan ended up as the top two run-scorers of the tournament. During the first T20I against the hosts, India lost Dhawan early on in the innings for just 1 run. However, KL Rahul played really well and scored 51 off 40 including 5 fours.

Sanjay Bangar names new opening pair for India

India head coach Sanjay Bangar has named new Indian opening pair for the second T20I against Australia. The upcoming match will be played today at the Sydney Cricket Ground in Sydney. Bangar reckons that India should go with Mayank Agarwal and Shikhar Dhawan.

Bangar heaped praise on KL Rahul for his willingness to do anything for the team. The batting coach further added saying that Rahul has done a great service to Team India when he has come out to bat at No.5. Bangar believes that Mayank may open with Dhawan.

Mayank was named in the first two ODIs against Australia. However, he failed to justify his selection as he scored 28 and 22 respectively. “It’s going to be a toss-up right because Rohit Sharma, unfortunately, isn’t available for the team, so I believe they will have to go with Mayank Agarwal and Shikhar Dhawan.

Shikhar Dhawan is going to be a consistent factor, but whether they opt to go with KL Rahul, who has again been in fabulous touch, is something that needs to be seen,” Sanjay said on the show Gameplan on Star Sports.

“KL Rahul has done great service to the Indian team in the recent past when he’s batted at No. 5, but I believe that Mayank Agarwal may just open with Shikhar Dhawan,” he added.

If India wins the game, they win the series and for Australia, it is a must-win game. The hosts are searching for a win to remain alive in the series and to set up a perfect climax on December 8.
