Shikhar Dhawan and the IPL: Shikhar Dhawan captaincy record

Shikhar Dhawan captaincy record: The seasoned opener is captaining an Indian Premier League match for the first time in eight years.

Shikhar Dhawan, the highest run-scorer in his first season for Punjab Kings in the present 15th season of the Indian Premier League, has entered the field with the extra burden of leading the side against Sunrisers Hyderabad in Navi Mumbai today.

Owing to the unavailability of usual skipper Mayank Agarwal due to a toe injury, Dhawan stepped out for the toss. Sunrisers skipper Kane Williamson requested Dhawan to bat first, but he couldnโ€™t make an impression with the bat in hand on what appeared to be a slow surface at the Dr DY Patil Sports Academy.

Dhawan, who opened the batting for Prabhsimran Singh, went back to the pavilion after hitting 8 (11) in an effort to clear mid-on against Bhuvneshwar Kumar.

Dhawan has been the 14th cricketer to lead Kings in an IPL match, the highest for any team. Dhawanโ€™s only previous IPL leadership came in 2014, when he captained Hyderabad.

SRH have won four and lost six IPL matches with Dhawan as captain, finishing as the sixth-ranked side on the points table. Dhawan was replaced as captain midway through the season by the then-West Indies captain Daren Sammy due to a lack of scoring (245 runs in 10 innings).

In terms of guiding India, Dhawan was given command of white-ball squads for the tour of Sri Lanka last year. Dhawan got 214 runs in six limited-over matches, with an average and strike rate of 42.80 and 95.96, respectively, including a half-century. India had won the ODI series 2-1, but had lost the T20I series 1-2 under Dhawan.
